We put this book together because not enough attention is being paid to a technological and economic phenomenon that is hugely important to all of our futures: the increasing displacement of workers by machines. This trend is accelerating, and it threatens not only our livelihoods in the near future, but also, in the long run, the way we identify ourselves, because what we do for work is so often a large part of that identity. Other authors have outlined this problem, but so far few proposals to deal with this situation have been proposed, and they have not been discussed in one place. And the proposals that are available have gained too little attention by policy makers. This book is an effort to remedy that.
