Fatal anaphylactic shock: case report In a French pharmacovigilance survey performed between 1 January 2000– 31 December 2012, a male patient [age not stated] was described, who developed fatal anaphylactic shock secondary to suxamethonium chloride for neuromuscular blocking. The male patient underwent surgery. Perioperatively, he had received suxamethonium chloride [route and dosage not stated]. Following surgery, he developed shock. During investigations, skin test was positive for suxamethonium chloride. Thus, a diagnosis of anaphylactic shock secondary to suxamethonium chloride was confirmed [time to reaction onset not stated]. Eight days later, he died [immediate cause of death not stated]. Author comment: "Finally, we suggest that patients should be better informed about their perioperative anaphylaxis to improve adherence to their scheduled appointment for allergy skin testing. This measure is essential to reduce the recurrence of [neuromuscular blocking agents] anaphylaxis." Petitpain N, et al.
