Abstract. Gestures are very important for the communication between humans. Nowadays new technologies of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) are being developed to convey commands from user’s to computers. Among them, communication though hand gesture is a natural and instinctive way to interact with the computer. Over the years Vision based real time gesture recognition system has witnessed a large growth because of its different beneficial applications, such as sign language to virtual reality and its capability to interact with system efficiently through HCI. In HCI using hand gesture, the main elements are hand gesture recognition and its tracking. At first a brief history of hand gesture recognition is deliberated and the technical challenges during the recognition process also enumerated. The methodologies for hand gesture identification, such as glove-based, vision-based and depth-based, are compared briefly. Bare hand gesture recognition and tracking using CamShift can provide a better Human-Computer Interaction. 1 Introduction Now a days computing devices become the part of human life. Human computer interaction (HCI) is the study of how user can interact with computer and the growths on successful interactions between computers and human users. Different methods are using for the reliable effects from user computer interaction. The word Gestures can define as meaningful body actions containing the actions and motions of head, fingers, hands etc. Communicating with computing devices using hand gesture is more natural and has least restriction for users in HCI. There is no need of any specially designed intermediate input devices for the interaction or communication between human and computer, when user’s bare hand is used as direct input device of a computing system. Keyboard and mouse are the common devices which used to interact with the system. Instead of them user can use hand and finger gestures for the communication in natural way. The recognition process of gestures can be generally categorized into two. First one is static hand gesture and second is dynamic hand gesture recognition [1]. Dynamic gestures are not constant and changes over a period of time but static gestures remains © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2016 A. Unal et al. motionless and is commonly known as postures. Pre-defined postures are used as the reference for static hand gesture recognition method. In real time gesture recognition system, input to the system will change in every instance, so this real time recognition method mainly focused to dynamic gestures. In our smart growing technical world hand gesture recognition has its own significance in the field of computer vision, image processing (IP) and artificial intelligence (AI). Mainly using hand gesture recog
