Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Definition SLE is an uncommon multi-system autoimmune rheumatological condition that is characterized by relapses and remissions. It is a world-wide disease that most commonly affects young women of child-bearing age. The cause of SLE is unclear but thought to involve a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors.
