Immediate or delayed hypersensitivity reactions: 23 case reports In a study of patients with suspected teicoplanin allergy, 23 patients [18 women and 5 men] aged 19–81 years were described, who developed immediate or delayed hypersensitivity reactions while receiving antibiotic therapy with ticoplanin [dosages, routes and outcomes not stated; not all durations of treatments to reactions onsets stated]. Case 1: A 71-year-old woman, who had penicillin allergy and had undergone orthopaedic surgery, received a second-line antibiotic treatment with ticoplanin. She had been receiving various other concomitant medications. She developed immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions in the form of hypotension, tachycardia, bronchospasm, urticaria and desaturation in less than 15 min of ticoplanin administration. Skin prick test and immediate intradermal skin test were performed using ticoplanin and were found to be positive. Skin prick test results to all concomitant drugs were negative. Case 2: An 81-year-old man, who had penicillin allergy and had undergone transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) under an unspecified spinal anaesthesia, received a second-line antibiotic treatment with ticoplanin. He had been receiving various other concomitant medications. He developed immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions in the form of hypotension, tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation and cardiac arrest (requiring resuscitation) in less than 5 min of ticoplanin administration. He was hospitalised. Skin prick test and immediate intradermal skin test were performed using ticoplanin and were found to be positive. Skin prick test results to all concomitant drugs were negative. Case 3: A 72-year-old woman, who had penicillin allergy and had undergone orthopaedic surgery under an unspecified spinal anaesthesia, received a second-line antibiotic treatment with ticoplanin. She had been receiving various other concomitant medications. She developed immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions in the form of hypotension, desaturation and difficulty breathing in less than 5 min of ticoplanin administration. Skin prick test and immediate intradermal skin test were performed using ticoplanin and were found to be positive. Skin prick test results to all concomitant drugs were negative. Case 4: A 40-year-old man, who had undergone orthopaedic surgery, received an antibiotic treatment with ticoplanin. He had been receiving various other concomitant medications. He developed immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions in the form of hypotension, tachycardia and flushing in less then 30 minutes of ticoplanin administration. A skin prick test was performed using ticoplanin was found to be negative. An immediate intradermal skin test was performed using ticoplanin was found to be positive. Skin prick test results to all concomitant drugs were negative. Case 5: A 56-year-old woman, who had penicillin allergy and had undergone orthopaedic surgery, received a second-line antibiotic treatment with ticoplanin. She had been receiving various other conco
