The 50th anniversary of the founding of the OR Society
The OR Club, the forerunner of the Operational Research Society, was founded in April 1948, making the Society the longest established OR society. This ®ftieth anniversary is being recognised in a number of ways, one of which is this special issue of JORS. This issue arises frrom a conference held at Bowness in May 1996 entitiled `The Foundation, Development and Success of OR Groups'. Eminent speakers Robert G. Dyson President of the Operational Research Society March 1998
from the UK and abroad presented a variety of perspectives on the topic and a number of the papers, plus discussion, appear in this issue. Anniversaries tend to be backward looking events, but the mood at the conference, and in the OR community, is for change and development. Let us look on the last ®fty years as a ®rm foundation on which the Society can build its future.
