Abstract

There are few research on how factors impact on the entrepreneurial intention of graduate student in Vietnam. Moreover, most scholars just pay attention to the effect of personal traits or characteristics on entrepreneurial intention. This study proposed an integrated research model that explains intentions to start-up by adding two new variables: educational support and contextual elements to the famous theory of planned behavior. In the model, attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, educational support and contextual elements are independent variables and entrepreneurial intention is the dependent variable. With the sample of 354 respondents, this cross-sectional research tried to find out the relationship between variables. Attitude is found to be the strongest factor that impacts the intention, followed by subjective norm. Contextual elements are considered as antecedents of personal attitude, and in return it is expected to have influence on entrepreneurial intention. The study makes theoretical contributions to the body of literature by proposing and validating the effect of contextual elements on attitude which in turn impact intention. Practically, the study provides useful knowledge for policy makers to improve the entrepreneurial-wave in our country. Keywords

Introduction

Entrepreneurship or venture creation impacts significantly on economic growth [1]. Entrepreneurship can contribute to economic development and technological revolution through technological progress, business expansion, wealth creation and new job creation [2]. Therefore, many scholars and policy makers consider entrepreneurial activities as an interesting topic and there should be more studies to gain more understanding on it [3]. D.G.T. Educational support

Contextual

Among the studies on this field, entrepreneurial intention has received an enormous concern with literatures contributed by researchers in economics, sociology, anthropology, business management, political sciences, as well as psychology all over the world. However, there has been very little research reported on entrepreneurial intention in Vietnam. Vietnamese research just pays attention on the role of personal traits or personal characteristics [4, 5] but not mentions about any external factors. Because of this gap in research, it is considerable to have a better knowledge of the antecedents of entrepreneurial intentions. And in this research context, the study desires to be one of the first efforts to investigate antecedents to entrepreneurship intention utilizing with adaptation the Theory of Planned Behavior [6], one of the dominant models applied to explain human behavior [7].
