Music is part of humanity. It has been so since Neolithic times, if not before. We know from their wall paintings that the ancient Egyptians loved to sing and dance and had some surprisingly sophisticated instruments. And so it has been for every culture ever since, music reflecting the inner spirit, the attitudes and feelings of people at any given time. Consequently, we have a wonderfully rich heritage of musical expression which, with suitably skilled performers, we can recreate today and enjoy, just as it was conceived and enjoyed at its origins. However, it is important that musicians take care of every single detail in the music and perform it, just as the composer intended. Some of the greatest composers, such as Beethoven, were quite particular about how a piece should be performed and would often write instructions in the margins of the manuscript. We must then, surely, follow these instructions as honest servants of the music itself, as bringers of a noble message, in order to bring forth the essence, the beauty and dynamics of it.
