r o l l i n g t e x t u r e of Mo-35 pct Re was d i f f e r e n t f r o m pure m o l y b d e n u m but e x a m i n a t i o n of t h e i r pole f i g u r e s (obtained by f i l m t e c h n i q u e s ) i n d i c a t e s that the t e x t u r e may be no d i f f e r e n t f r o m o t h er b c c m a t e r i a l s d e f o r m e d c o m p a r a b l e a m o u n t s . A m e t a s t a b l e b c c alloy of Z r - 1 8 pct Cb e x a m i n e d by K e e l e r 4 showed a r o i l i n g t e x t u r e quite s i m i l a r to o t h e r b cc m a t e r i a l s . The p r e s e n t study was undertaken to p r o v i d e m o r e i n f o r m a t i o n about c o m p o s i t i o n a l e f f e c t s on t e x t u r e in a r o i l e d polyc r y s t a l l i n e b cc alloy. The N b - 4 0 pct V al l o y was c h o s e n f o r i n v e s t i g a t i o n for s e v e r a l r e a s o n s : 1) The r e s u l t s could be d i r e c t l y c o m p a r e d with our e a r l i e r e x t e n s i v e study of t e x t u r e d e v e l o p m e n t in pure niobium, s,6 2) T h e r e a r e d i s t i n c t d i f f e r e n c e s in the d e f o r m a t i o n b e h a v i o r of this a l l oy

by r o i l i n g c a u s e s m e t a l s and a l l o y s to d ev e l o p p r e f e r r e d c r y s t a l l o g r a p h i c o r i e n t a t i o n s (texture). Many v a r i a b l e s influence this p h e n o m e n o n , the m o s t w e l l known p e r h a p s b e i n g the t e x t u r e t r a n s i t i o n (copper type to b r a s s type) c a u s e d by a l l o y additions to fcc m e t a l s of r e l a t i v e l y high s t a c k i n g f au l t e n e r g y . ~ The b c c m e t a l s and a l l o y s with the e x c e p t i o n of the f e r r o u s m a t e r i a l s have r e c e i v e d only l i t t l e attention in the a r e a of t e x t u r e d e v e l o p m e n t . Th e e x t e n t to which c o m p o s i t i o n a s a v a r i a b l e (solid solution e f f e c t s ) m a y a f f e c t the cold r o l l i n g t e x t u r e of the b cc m e t a l s r e m a i n s v i r t u a l l y unknown. P r e v i o u s w o r k by W a l t e r and Koch 2 showed that the addition of s i l i c o n to i r o n s i n g l e c r y s t a l s r o l l e d in the cube o r i e n t a t i o n s
