The Effects of Alloying Elements on the Gamma to Alpha Transformation in Steels Foreword This set of four papers is taken from the third workshop on alloying element effects in steels, held as part of the October 2002 TMS meeting in Columbus Ohio. It reflects a welcome resurgence of interest in these elusive phenomena. A first such workshop was held in St. Louis Mo. in October 2000. It was inspired and organized by Mats Hillert, John Ågren, Gerhard Inden and myself, with the objective of bringing together the community of interested researchers for informal and wide-ranging discussions. That first meeting resulted in a lively sharing of information and ideas; we also considered ways of establishing a bank of high purity, well-characterized alloys for research. A second workshop, held in Metz, France, in August 2001, continued the discussions, and helped to define critical areas for experimentation and modeling. These four papers then represent a fraction of the recent activity in this area. Apart from the overview by Aaronson et al, each represents a different approach to research on alloying element effects on ferrite formation. It is our hope that interest in the area will continue to grow and that new generations of researchers will choose to contribute to this challenging field. Gary Purdy McMaster University
