This book was an ambitious project, and I suspect it will be the first of many editions. The 13 chapters provide in-depth coverage of the donor evaluation, including financial, emotional, and legal issues, special anesthetic considerations, and the standard techniques of laparoscopic and retroperitoneoscopic donor nephrectomy. Two-thirds of the way through the book, we are teased with descriptions of laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) and robot-assisted laparoscopic donor nephrectomy procedures and left with the thought that one, or both of them, may be developed into the new standard of care. The final chapter is a visit to the technique of open donor nephrectomy, a procedure that has served us and our patients well for decades.
