THE
potential advantage of in s i t u high voltage e l e c t r o n m i c r o s c o p y e n a b l e s us to o b s e r v e d i r e c t l y and c o n t i n u o u s l y v a r i o u s phase t r a n s f o r m a t i o n s in s t e e l and the m o v e m e n t s of d i s l o c a t i o n s d u r i n g t r a n s f o r m a t i o n s at high t e m p e r a t u r e s . l " ~ T h i s method p e r m i t s the o b s e r v a t i o n of the i n t e r i o r of thin s p e c i m e n s at h i g h e r m a g n i f i c a t i o n than has b e e n a t t a i n e d in s i m i l a r i n v e s t i g a t i o n s5,6 u s i n g other m e t a l l o g r a p h i c methods such as optical m i c r o s c o p y o r t h e r m i o n i c e m i s s i o n microscopy. The p r e s e n t p a p e r d e s c r i b e s a s e r i e s of e x p e r i m e n t s on the f o r m a t i o n of a u s t e n i t e f r o m v a r i o u s m i x t u r e s of f e r r i t e and c e m e n t i t e . P a r t i c u l a r a t t e n t i o n is paid to the i n t e r a c t i o n s b e t w e e n m i g r a t i n g ~ / ~ i n t e r f a c e s and i n d i v i d u a l c e m e n t i t e p a r t i c l e s . The o b s e r v e d r e s u l t s a r e c o m p a r e d with the t h e o r e t i c a l models for a u s t e n i t i z a t i o n%8 and p r e v i o u s o b s e r v a t i o n s by optical and e l e c t r o n m i c r o s c o p y . 9,~~
