I used to do my best worrying on a plane. I could worry about all manner of things, some logical, most irrational, but all inconsequential: Would there be enough space in the overhead bin for my bag? Would that screaming child at the gate be sitting next to me? Did I bring my noise cancelling earphones? Would I get off this plane alive? My propensity to worry in this environment did not reflect my normal disposition and I came to realise that what I was experiencing was a simple case of anticipatory anxiety. I was obviously a little unsettled about relinquishing control of my own destiny and placing it in the hands of a complete stranger in control of an aluminium tube being propelled by a jet engine, high in the air, at vast speeds. What’s the big deal? The reassuring thing for me is that I am not alone in my worries. A quick glance at my fellow passengers on any flight confirms that a large number of them occupy a similar state of discomposure.
