Inverbrackie, Curtin and Villawood In December 2010 the Australian government announced the opening of the Inverbrackie Alternate Place of Detention. It was one of many centres that opened throughout 2010 and 2011  in response to an increasing number of asylum seeker boat arrivals. Inverbrackie was former military housing, about 35 km outside of Adelaide and a little over 1 km outside of the town of Woodside. Unsurprisingly, there was substantial community opposition.1 Woodside sits within one of the more conservative electorates in Australia. This opposition however was not just about Inverbrackie, nor were these anxieties isolated to Woodside. These issues struck at the heart of the Australian psyche. While the “land of the fair go”2 for some, when it came to relatively few desperate people seeking help, we were seemingly happy to look away, dismiss their claims and attack those who argued otherwise. These “boat people” held up a mirror and forced us to confront who we thought we were. I was not to know any of this when
