■ The Japanese Ministry for Health, Labour and Welfare has stated that doctors are no longer to prescribe oseltamivir to adolescents aged 10-19 years of age. The announcement follows two separate suicides, in which a boy and girl (both aged 14 years) jumped to their deaths whilst receiving the drug. The number of deaths in Japan of people taking the drug is now 54 (including 16 children or adolescents). In addition, the EMEA has recommended an update of the drug’s safety information, stating that patients (in particular children and adolescents) receiving oseltamivir should be closely monitored and that a healthcare professional should be contacted immediately if the patient demonstrates any kind of unusual behaviour.
