 Preface

The organizers of this first conference on the Navier-Stokes equations at Oberwolfach were J.G. Heywood, K. Masuda, R.Rautmann ,and V.A. Solonnikov. Forty-four participants (including 7 from Japan and 9 from the USSR) discussed new results which were presented in 43 lectures, additional talks, and movies. These results concerned many aspects of the Navier-Stokes theory, including problems in unbounded domains, free boundary problems, problems for compressible and viscoelastic fluids, the theory of stability and attractors, and recent advances in numerical methods of flow computation based on new theoretical approaches. The organizers thank Professor Barner and the members of the Forsch
