Older adults are more susceptible to complications such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) as a result of COVID-19 viral pneumonia. They are commonly frail and with multiple comorbidities. Frailty means reduced functional reserve of the different organs and systems such as the respiratory system. Hence, older adults have less ability to react to acute stressors. During the current COVID-19 pandemic, older adult patients’ mortality is increased. The contagious and death rate of elderly in nursing homes and health care residences is high. Older adults with COVID disease management is complicated. The reduced availability of ICU beds may limit their access to ICU. On the other hand, the prognosis may be weak, and the airway management and ventilation strategy must take into account many specific elder clinic and physiologic characteristics.
