Foreword

This is a remarkable book. It opens up a whole new terrain of exploration and discovery in the health care field that, so far as I know, has never been attempted before. Though Fiona Webster does not give a detailed account here, her dissertation, on which this draws, gathered together the research literature establishing ‘best practices’ for the treatment of thrombolytic strokes. The venture of discovery she undertook and recounts in this book found and made visible ‘best practices’ as they are taken up in actual local situations of medical practice in the Canadian province of Ontario. This is valuable work, with implications way beyond those for the particular case of therapy for thrombolytic strokes. Its significance is not only in what we learn about how ‘best practice’ recommendations may be grounded in assumptions about the availability of specialized skills and relevant technology which are not always present in the actual local situations of delivery work.
