The Spirit Will Continue
It was about two years ago in my first editorial, entitled “The Millennium Start,” that the sketch of a new publication paradigm for such a diverse, active field of signal processing was born. In less than two years, the progress of EURASIP JASP has been amazing, even to myself. Let me first summarize a few important points to share with you. (1) The number of papers submitted in our first year (2001) was 275, which was among the top (three) journals in the area of signal processing. In this year so far, for the first six months, there has been over 200 submissions. If this trend continues, EURASIP JASP will be (nearly) the highest among its peer publications in signal processing. It should be noted that EURASIP JASP does not publish letter/correspondence. (2) The quality of papers is excellent and continues to improve. This year, we will publish about 100–120 papers (around 10–12 papers per issue). Given 300–400 paper submissions, the overall quality of accepted papers is pretty good. (3) We have excellent special issues scheduled up to the end of 2004 now. All the special issues are on some important emerging issues of great concerns to the community. The special issues to be published soon are mostly done. Many to be published later are either wrapping up or on its way according to the schedule. I have seen many excellent papers submitted by outstanding researchers from all over the world: EURASIP JASP is truly international. The entire chain of process is pretty healthy. (4) EURASIP JASP has recently been approved to be included in the Science Citation Index Expanded, in less than a year since JASP applied for being included. The time taken was extremely short given the well-known long review cycle for the approval. We should be proud of such a record. (5) The number of visitors to the journal web site in January 2002 was 3104 and increased to 4229 in May 2002. Although we do not have all the numbers from the start of the journal web site, the indications are clear: online visitors are definitely increasing and they are already a significant number. The journal was being visited over 135 times a day in May 2002. All in all, I am very pleased to inform you that EURASIP JASP is in excellent shape with the strong support of you. It is you
who helped in creating a new paradigm to address the needs in the diverse, active field of signal processing. We are one community, with a few societies serving different needs and purposes, but the goals are all the same. For the benefit of the community, we shall tear down the turf that often breaks us apart. There is a need for healthy competition within the community—for good research work should be published in time to serve the purpose. On the other hand, constructive collaboration is also very important to advance the science and technology of signal processing. We need to take an open-mind approach toward building a stronger community. EURASIP JASP has been such a driving force, fostering international collaboration, thanks to all of your endeavors
