Preface
This monograph blends survey, ethnographic and interview data to understand the main contemporary economic challenge in Malawi. The monograph shows how a combination of careful qualitative and quantitative research into the main economic activity in a country, alongside value chain and political economy analysis, offers a set of insights and policy suggestions for those who allocate resources and set regulations. Through long-term engagement with the main industry in a country, researchers are able to build up strong and long-lasting relationships of trust with key actors. The research on which this book is based has relied on the goodwill of colleagues, friends and many individuals working in the tobacco industry. Both authors are grateful for the honest manner in which they have been repeatedly welcomed in Malawi whether in industrial zones or in rural villages. The research for this book has been a humbling and deeply educational experience. We warmly welcome comments and suggestion for how the manuscript can be improved
