PREFACE

The Leningrad International Topological Conference was held at the Leningrad Department of the V.A.Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR,August 22-27, 1982. The Organizing Committee included P.S.Alexandrov, L.D.Faddeev (the chairman), A.A. Ivanov, A.A.Mal'cev, S.P.Novikov, M.M.Postnikov, and Ju.A.Smirnov. The aim of the conference was to reflect recent advances in topology and applications and to stimulate discussions for new directions and for future research. No restrictions were put on the subject matter of papers; in fact all main branches of topology were represented ranging from the most abstract branches of set-theoretical topology to the applications of geometrical ideas in theoretical physics. The program of the conference consisted of six 60-minute lectures presented by A.Dold, N.Kuiper, S.Mardesic, S.P.Novikov, V.A.Rokhlin, Ju.M.Smirnov and 168 seminar talks. The seminar talks were scheduled under three headings: General Topoloqy, Algebraic Topology, and Applications of Topology. Note that in accordance with the usual practice in the Soviet Union the papers on shape theory were read at the section on Algebraic Topology and the papers on the topology of manifolds in most cases were read at the section on Applications. Seminar reports were divided into 30-minute and 15-minute talks. The Proceedings of the conference include the majority of papers delivered as 30-minute talks and a number of the most interesting 15 minute papers. The present volume contains papers written in English. The papers written in Russian constitute the second volume of the proceedings wh
