Abstract—Conditions under which quadratic magneto-optical interaction leads to a number of features in the conditions of localization and propagation of collective magnetic TM polaritons are determined by the example of a 1D magnetic superlattice of the easy-axis-antiferromagnet–nonmagnetic-insulator type, in which the easy magnetization axis is orthogonal to the applied external dc electric field. INTRODUCTION An important feature of propagation and localization of electromagnetic waves in 1D magnetic superlattices (1D magnetic photonic crystals) is the possibility of purposeful and significant influencing the electrodynamic properties of such a composite by an external magnetic field. The number of studies devoted to different aspects of this problem constantly increases. The overwhelming majority of them dealt with TE waves. However, the possibility of transformation of the spectrum of TM polaritons of a 1D magnetic photonic crystal by an external dc electric field (under the conditions of quadratic electro-optic effect) has not been considered until now. At the same time, it is well known that quadratic magneto-optical interaction may significantly affect the propagation of an electromagnetic wave in a magnetic medium of any symmetry, leading, in particular, to birefringence in an easy-axis antiferromagnet [1]. In [2, 3], the conditions under which an external dc electric field induces a number of specific features in the conditions of propagation and localization of electromagnetic waves of both s and p polarizations were determined by the example of a homogeneous easy-axis antiferromagnet. Nevertheless, the effects of quadratic magneto-optical interaction in the spectrum of TM polaritons of a 1D magnetic superlattice placed in an external dc electric field have not been analyzed. Note that solution of this problem is also of undoubted interest for determining the character of propagation and localization of electromagnetic waves in a 1D magnetic superlattice of the magnet–ferroelectric type. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of quadratic magneto-optical interaction on the conditions of localization of TM polaritons near the outer surface
of a semibounded 1D superlattice of the easy-axis-antiferromagnet–nonmagnetic-insulator type, provided that the easy-magnetization axis and the external electric field are mutually orthogonal. The structure of this study is as follows. The first section contains the statement of the problem and material relations for magnetic and nonmagnetic media forming a 1D superlattice of the easy-axis-antiferromagnet–nonmagnetic-i
