Foreword
I have known Jeff Young since he started his internship at Wake Forest University in 1988. Since that time, I have been happy to be his mentor and friend. He followed many of the steps I took in my career including becoming a trauma director at a university hospital; becoming involved in the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, becoming an experienced and busy site review for the verification review committee; and progressing through leadership roles in national trauma organizations. Even though there are many trauma centers and many people who work in them, no one has taken the time to write out the basic principles and processes to progress from a hospital to a trauma center. Dr. Young has done this admirably, and this handbook will be of use to administrators, surgeons, fellows, nurses, and anyone deeply involved in trauma center care. Dr. Young’s extensive experience performing site visits for the ACS allows him a unique perspective that all centers will find helpful. I hope that you will take the time to read this handbook and recommend it to all who may benefit from it. Saving the injured is a calling, and doing it better every day is a profession. T
