Preface Managing patients with patellofemoral problems can be challenging. Most clinicians have not been taught these well, principally because the evidence base for the subject is poor. This reflects a lack of consensus on terminology, a non-standardised methodology for examination, no clear definitive clinical tests that give meaningful numbers, and only the Kujala score validated for anterior knee pain rather than for patellofemoral instability (although this has recently been addressed). In the last two decades, radiological measurements and how they can help decision-making, are the notable changes for the better. However, any statements about managing patients with patellofemoral disorders are still based mainly on expert opinion despite some guidance from imaging. Traditional textbooks on the patellofemoral joint follow the standard format with chapters, for instance, on evolution, anatomy, biomechanics, imaging, and operations.
