Type designation of Fumana fontanesii and F. grandiflora (Cistaceae) P. Pablo Ferrer-Gallego1

& Jaime Güemes2

Summary. The typification of two names in the genus Fumana: F. fontanesii Clauson ex Pomel and F. grandiflora Jaub. & Spach (Cistaceae) is discussed. The designation of the nomenclatural types is based on the assessment of the respective protologues and the original material. The name F. fontanesii is lectotypified using a specimen from Clauson’s material at MPU, and F. grandiflora using a specimen preserved at P and collected by Aucher-Éloy in Turkey. Key Words. lectotype, nomenclature, Pomelina.

Introduction The circum-mediterranean genus Fumana Spach (1836: 359) (Cistaceae Jussieu) is represented by approximately 25 taxa in the Mediterranean flora. These are perennial species, usually growing on dry, rocky, stony, or sandy habitats in garrigues, macchias and rocky grasslands (Janchen 1920; Heywood 1968; Jafri 1977; Pignatti 1982; Greuter et al. 1984; Güemes & Molero 1993; Arrington & Kubitzki 2003; Bogdanović et al. 2011). Fumana fontanesii Clauson ex Pomel (1860: 10) (Cistaceae) is a shrub, growing on dry, rocky, stony or sandy ground, and distributed in North Africa (Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria) and in the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula (Battandier & Trabut 1888; Maire 1923; Greuter et al. 1984; Güemes et al. 1989; Güemes & Molero 1993; Le Floc’h et al. 2010; African Plant Database 2019). This species was renamed by Güemes & Raynaud (1992: 164) as Pomelina fontanesii (Pomel) Güemes & Raynaud. Fumana grandiflora Jaub. & Spach (Jaubert & Spach 1848: 73, t. 258) is a plant distributed in Turkey (Davis 1965). This species was also renamed as Pomelina fontanesii subsp. grandiflora (Jaub. & Spach) Güemes & Raynaud (1992: 165). The present paper, is a new contribution to the nomenclature in Cistaceae (see e.g., Ferrer-Gallego & Laguna 2012; Ferrer-Gallego et al. 2013a, 2013b, 2013c; Ferrer-Gallego 2015a, 2015b; Ferrer-Gallego & Boisset 2015; Ferrer-Gallego et al. 2015), and the names Fumana fontanesii and F. grandiflora are typified to contribute to the stability of the nomenclature. The designation of the corresponding types is based on the consultation of original material and the literature cited in the respective protologues.

Background and typification of the names Fumana fontanesii Pomel (1860: 10) published the name Fumana fontanesii followed by a direct reference to an early description published by Desfontaines (1798: 414, Tab. 105), as: “3. F. Fontanesii, Clauson (Cistus fumana, var. A. Desf. Fl. atl. t. 105, excl. syn.)”, and the provenance “Hab. les collines du Tell : Milianah, Hamman-Rhiga, dj.-Hallala (Ammi-Moussa)”. Desfontaines (1798: 414, Tab. 105) published the name Cistus fumana accompanied by several synonyms cited from Linnaeus (1753: 535), Jacque, Bauhin, Tournefort, Clusius, Barrelier and Hall, and followed by the variety named as “A”, also with some synonyms cited from Linnaeus, Bauhin, Tournefort, Plukenet and Barrelier.
