Urticaria can generally be effectively treated with antihistamines and/or other agents even when the cause cannot be identified Urticaria is characterized by transient, recurrent, usually pruritic wheals. There are many known causes, but many cases remain idiopathic. In addition to patient education and avoidance of triggers, histamine H1 receptor antihistamines are an effective first-line treatment for urticaria. For refractory urticarias, other pharmacological treatments are available.
