A t h e o r e t i c a l equation f o r p r e d i c t i n g v e l o c i t y p r o f i l e s in b e d s of r e c t a n g u l a r g e o m e t r y p a c k e d with e q u a l - s i z e d p a r t i c l e s is p r e s e n t e d . Use of this equation to p r e d i c t v e l o c i t y p r o f i l e s r e q u i r e s the m e a s u r e m e n t of only one e x p e r i m e n t a l v a r i a b l e . P r e d i c t e d and m e a s u r e d v e l o c i t y p r o f i l e s in s q u a r e and r e c t a n g u l a r p a c k e d b e d s using a t h e r m i s t o r p r o b e w e r e in good a g r e e m e n t (• and • p c t r e s p e c t i v e l y ) . F o r p a c k i n g s containing a r a n g e of s i z e s it was found that the v e l o c i t y w a s g r e a t e r at the w a l l and a t the c e n t e r of the b e d than it was in the i n t e r m e d i a t e r e g i o n s . T h i s b e h a v i o r , which h a s not b e e n p r e v i o u s l y r e p o r t e d , is a t t r i b u t e d to p o r o s i t y v a r i a t i o n s . R e s u l t s o b t a i n e d f r o m a s l i c e m o d e l of a c o p p e r b l a s t f u r n a c e i n d i c a t e that in t h e s e f u r n a c e s t h e r e a r e two s e p a r a t e r e g i o n s of flow. One of t h e s e h a s two c o m p o n e n t s of v e l o c i t y and the o t h e r h a s only one. In the s i n g l e component flow r e g i o n the v e l o c i t y m a y be p r e d i c t e d by the t h e o r e t i c a l equation p r e s e n t e d . The i m p l i c a t i o n s of the r e s u l t s of t h i s i n v e s t i g a t i o n to n o n f e r r o u s b l a s t f u r n a c e s a r e a l s o d i s c u s s e d .
