Foreword

Claude Boyd is a name that is well known in the field of aquaculture and aquatic sciences, and for good reason. His research and teaching are marked with clarity and pragmatism that have addressed gaps in knowledge and brought about leaps in understanding. Much of the knowledge that we take for granted today, with regards to water quality and its management, is built upon the work that he has shared. This book represents the continuation of his efforts to advance the field. While Dr. Boyd’s work is typically associated with aquaculture, the principles and theories elaborated upon in this book are fundamental to all aquatic sciences with widespread application to our aquatic environments and water resources. Water Quality: An Introduction bridges a gap. Traditionally, books on this topic fall on two ends of a spectrum. Books on one end of the spectrum touch upon the subject matter and lack depth. On the other end of the spectrum are highly specialized references intended for practitioners or researchers with years of experience in the field. Neither serves to provide a strong foundation from which to build expertise. Water Quality: An Introduction creates that opportunity, and indeed has for countless professionals. Furthermore, the information contained within these pages can be found scattered among books on a range
