In 2009, the Taliban, a fundamentalist political group, released an edict that girls could not attend school in the Swat Valley district of Pakistan. More than a hundred girls’ schools in the area were blown up, and although some schools later reopened, many girls were afraid to attend. In 2012, 15-year old Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by the Taliban for her years of activism in support of girls’ education. In 2014, Malala was co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her fight for girls’ rights to education. At age 17, she became the youngest ever Nobel Prize winner.
