Information XXI Mendeleev Congress on General and Applied Chemistry The XXI Mendeleev Congress on General and Applied Chemistry was held on September 9 to 13, 2019, in St. Petersburg. The Congress was organized by the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), D. I. Mendeleev Russian Chemical Society, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, the St. Petersburg Government, St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg Mining University, Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR), and A. N. Frumkin Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry of the RAS. The congress was conducted under the auspices of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). Academician A. M. Sergeev, President of the RAS, M. M. Kotyukov, Minister of Science and Education of the RF, and V. V. Kirillov, Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg, were Co-Chairmen of the Congress. The Mendeleev Congress became a key event held in the Russian Federation in relation to the International Year of the Periodic Table proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on December 20, 2017. The International Year was devoted to the 150th anniversary of D. I. Mendeleev´s discovery of the Periodic Table. The Congress received welcoming addresses of President of the Russian Federation V. V. Putin and UNESCO Executive Board. The opening ceremony was attended by D. A. Men dvedev, Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation; T. A. Golikova, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation; M. M. Kotyukov, Minister of the Science and Higher Education; A. M. Sergeev, President of the RAS; and A. D. Beglov, acting Governor of St. Petersburg.
The list of participants of the Congress included 3871 persons from 60 countries, including 1000 persons registered for virtual participation. Among the Congress participants, there were 30 Full Members and 32 Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences and several national Academies of Sciences; heads of international and national scientific unions and associations; scientists and specialists from top research centers, universities, industrial plants and associations; and legislative and executive authorities. More than 1285 young scientists and students participated in the Congress. The scope of the Congress included nine plenary sessions, 94 breakout meetings within 10 Sections and five English-language satellite symposia, the Mendeleev-2019 conference for young scientists, four round-table discussions, and three poster sessions, which covered all of the key fields of fundamental and applied chemistry. The Congress was accompanied by exhibitions of scientific literature, instrumentation, scientific engineering and innovative design products of enterprises and organizations from various regions of Russia.
