he European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) is requesting nominations for the €U-40 Materials Prize, which recognizes outstanding contributions to materials research by a scientist under 40. The researchers MRS must show exceptional promise as leaders in materials science and have performed the research for which this prize is awarded while working in Europe.
The award consists of a €5000 cash prize, a certificate, waiver of the meeting registration fee, and presentation of a plenary talk at the 2012 Spring E-MRS Meeting where the award will be presented. The nomination package, which should not exceed 10 pages (excluding the list of key publications), should include a curriculum vitae including birth date, a list of key publications (including
citations and impact factors), letters of support from two well-established scientists, and any additional supporting information relevant to the award. The nomination package should be sent by email to emrs@emrs-strasbourg. com (subject: eu40materials) before December 31, 2011. T
he 2nd European Energy Conference will be held on April 17–20, 2012 in Maastricht, The Netherlands. This biennial conference series, launched in 2010, will provide participants with a view and a vision on how the future of energy in Europe could look like. It will be the forum to define the role MRS of energy science and research in the transformation process toward the future sustainable European energy system. The conference is organized by the European Science Foundation, the European Materials Research Society,
and the European Physical Society who share the conviction that energy research and development will be substantially more efficient, with faster progress and increased comprehension through interaction of their specialist disciplines: material sciences, physics, chemistry, engineering, and environmental sciences. The conference is chaired by Harald Bolt, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany, under the patronage of Günther H. Oettinger, the European Union Commissioner for Energy, who will give a plenary address.
Other confirmed plenary speakers include Former Secretary General of NATO, Javier Solana; Under Secretary for Science in the U.S. Department of Energy, Steven Koonin; and Minister of Economic Affairs in The Netherlands, Maxime Verhagen (or representative). Conference symposia include Systems Aspects and Sustainability, Sciences for Energy, Primary Energy Conversion, Energy Networks and Storage, and Efficient End Use of Energy.
