T H I S note d e s c r i b e s a new m e t h o d of d e t e r m i n i n g a pole f i g u r e of a tubing s a m p l e using a single s p e c i m e n m a c h i n e d f r o m the wall of the tubing i n s t e a d of the conventional t r a n s m i s s i o n 1 o r c o m p o s i t e m e t h o d s , z's The new method e m p l o y s a c y l i n d r i c a l s a m p l e m a chined f r o m the tube wall, a s shown in F i g . 1. The s i n g l e s p e c i m e n m e t h o d used with X - r a y r e f l e c t i o n t e c h n i q u e s i s s i m p l e r than the t r a n s m i s s i o n method. M o r e t e x t u r e i n f o r m a t i o n is obtained by t h i s m e t h o d than with o t h er m e t h o d s , a b r o a d r e g i o n f r o m the r a d i a l to t a n g e n t i a l d i r e c t i o n b e i n g d e t e r m i n e d . T h i s f e a t u r e is e s p e c i a l l y a d v a n t a g e o u s when d e a l in g with hcp m a t e r i a l s such as z i r c o n i u m , s i n c e m o s t of the i m p o r t a n t i n f o r m a t i o n about the b a s a l plane p o l e s is c o n tai n ed in this region. 3 A longitudinal s e c t i o n was cut f r o m a Z i r c a l o y - 2 tube of 0.56 in. OD and 0.062-in. wall t h i c k n e s s . A 3 s p e c i m e n about -~ in. long was then ground to a c y l i n d e r of 0.058 in. in diam and c h e m i c a l l y e t c h e d in a s o l u tion of 65 p a r t s l a c t i c a c id , 30 p a r t s HNO3 and 5 p a r t s HF to r ern o v e about 0.006 f r o m the s u r f a c e . A m o d i f i e d g o n i o m e t e r d e s i g n e d to a c c e p t a c y l i n d r i c a l s p e c i m e n was i n s t a l l e d in a S i e m e n s t e x t u r e diff r a c t o m e t e r to p r o v i d e the ~ and /3 m o t i o n s defined in Fig. 1. The g o n i o m e t e r m o t i o n s w e r e d r i v e n co n t i n uously such that ~ i n c r e a s e d by 5 deg p e r 360 deg of /3 motion. A s m a l l b e a m , 1 m m in d i a m , was used to e l i m i n a t e the rapid d e c r e a s e in o b s e r v e d i n t e n s i t y as the s a m p l e was t i l t e d past the point w h e r e p a r t of the d i f f r a c t e d b e a m began to fall outside the r e c e i v i n g s l i t s . E l i m ination of this e f f e c t , a n a l o g o u s to the d e f o c u s i n g e f f e c t for flat s a m p l e s , r e n d e r s the o b s e r v e d i n t e n s i t y l e s s s e n s i t i v e to s m a l l e r r o r s in s a m p l e a l i g n m e n t . P e a k to b a c k g r o u n d r a t i o s of 10 to 1 w e r e obtained with this c o n f i g u r a t i o n . A c o r r e c t i o n f a c t o r m u s t be i n t r o d u c e d s i n c e at the s p e c i m e n s u r f a c e the t r u e r a d i a l d i r e c t i o n of the o r i g i n a l tubing v a r i e s around the c i r c u m f e r e n c e of the s p e c i m e n . 4 On line a c q u i s i t i o n of pole f i g u r e data was a c c o m p l i s h e d f r o m a r e m o t e t e r m i n a l of a G E - 6 3 5 t i m e s h a r i n g c o m p
