Abstract The power swing blocking function is a very important element for distance relays to prevent unwanted tripping of transmission lines. In this paper, a new method is proposed for blocking of distance relay when a power swing occurs. In proposed method, chaos technique is used to detect the power swing and discrimination the faults occurring simultaneously with a power swing. The proposed algorithm detects the power swing using logistic map and blocks the relay. Also, the relay will be unblocked by the proposed algorithm when a permanent fault occurs simultaneously with the power swing. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, different types of power swings and simultaneous faults are simulated in DigSilent software. Then, the achieved data from the simulations are used in the Matlab environment to apply chaos theory for distinguishing between power swing and faults. The proposed method is also implemented on a real-time relay and has been tested by using a tester device. The results achieved by various case studies demonstrate the pertinence of the proposed method. 1 Introduction Power transmission lines protection system is one of the vital systems in the power network. Since nearly 85% of faults occur in high voltage (HV) and ultra-high voltage (UHV) transmission lines, this makes more important the protection of these lines [1, 2]. Distance protection is most common for the security of the transmission lines [3]. The simple operational principle of distance relay is one of the prominent points to use this relay by power system protection engineers [4]. Mal-operation of distance relays in the HV and UHV lines can cause cascading power transmission lines outages, and as a result, a blackout can occur in the power system. These types of blackouts are always undesirable for the power system, and it can impose high economic losses on energy transmission companies [1]. The * Farzad Razavi [email protected] 1

main task of protective relays is the fast clearance of faults in the power system. Nevertheless, during some unwanted events, these relays may not be able to operate correctly [5]. One of these events is the power swing (PS) phenomenon that can be very challenging for distance protection [6]. The unwanted operation of the relay during the power swing may cause unnecessary separation of the tran
