Abstract. There are many benefits that smart home technology can bring to the modern household however, smart home tech-nology is yet in early development and has struggled to adopt among consumers. Some of the challenges that smart home technology faces are privacy & security, trust, reliabil-ity & pricing. However, many literature has dealt with the gap between smart homeowner needs and the functionality smart devices offers to the smart homeowner. A number of models and framework has been adopted to explain smart home technology readiness. This paper endeavours to review Internet of Things Smart Homes in general, challenges and open issues, and countermeasures. The main challenges and open issues identified in this paper are privacy & security, interoperability, costs, energy efficiency, trust, perceived usefulness, effort expectancy, performance expectancy/connectivity standards, installation, administration and maintenance smart home technology faces within these two models. Solutions to these challenges that are being proposed or implemented are also discussed. Although Internet Of Things smart home is a fast-growing technology but has a number of challenges and these have made it not to grow as expected. 1 Introduction The last decade has shown a rapid interest increase in smart home technology and machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication that was namely used in high-level industries are now becoming part of our daily lifestyle [19]. [45] states that modern smart home owners with appliances and remote controllable device is estimated to reach US153 billion with a smart home penetration rate of 18.1% by 2023. Smart technology trend was most apparent in the mobile industry but has now shifted to home appliance and has now changed the way we live in our homes. [19] states that the home owner’s expectation has changed from pushing buttons to automated computing technology. Automated computing technology implies that appliances should no longer perform tasks on isolation but as a collective. There are two sides to the coin when it comes to smart home technology.
