Pharmaceutical Medicine was listed as a medical specialty in the UK in April 2002 under the European Specialist Medical Qualifications Order (1995). To be certified as a specialist, a pharmaceutical physician must complete a programme of Higher Medical Training (HMT) leading to a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST-UK). Prospective entrants to HMT must complete 2 years of general professional training in approved hospital posts following full registration, before entering a post in pharmaceutical medicine. The physician may then sign up to a 4-year individualised training programme approved by the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine and the Joint Committee on HMT of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK. This comprises a 2-year programme of basic training, covering the core Syllabus in pharmaceutical medicine, leading to the Faculty’s Diploma in Pharmaceutical Medicine by examination. A 2-year modular programme of advanced (practical) training in seven fields of practice in pharmaceutical medicine follows or accompanies basic training, these are: medicines regulation, clinical pharmacology, clinical development, statistics and data management, drug safety surveillance, healthcare marketplace and interpersonal and management skills. The modular training is a competency–based assessment programme conducted through workplace experience, supplemented by approved courses. A faculty senior specialty adviser and a nominated educational supervisor in the workplace, normally the physician’s medical manager, form the core training team and together with the participant, construct and oversee the training programme. The HMT programme is conducted to the principles and standards of Good Pharmaceutical Medical Practice, laid down by the UK’s General Medical Council. The prospective HMT programme, commenced on March 2003. By the end of 2004, over 100 physicians will have enrolled and, for those previously holding the Diploma, it is expected that the first CCSTs will be awarded in March 2005, with the first fully prospective CCSTs awarded in 2007.
