Preface

After serving for many years as head of a family office for “America’s Richest Family,”1 I launched Greycourt & Co., Inc. That was back in 1986, and at the time Greycourt was one of the first independent firms working with ultra-­ wealthy families. Today, Greycourt continues to be among a small handful of premier independent firms in the ultra-high net worth space, advising ultra-­ wealthy families in the US, Canada, Latin America, and Europe. Over the nearly 35 years since Greycourt’s founding, I have learned a very great deal about what is required to launch and build a firm serving ultra-­ wealthy families and to survive and prosper in what is an intensely competitive field. The point of this book is to pass that learning along to other advisors who may be interested in working with the ultra-wealthy. Every year I talk with many financial advisors who have been successful working with “smaller” families, typically “mass affluent” families with perhaps one or two clients in the $20 million or so range.
