A preface is anticipatory. It anticipates what is to come. Anticipating what is to come poses a problem for anticipation. Because what is to come is out of hand, it cannot be comprehended wholly. If it were to be comprehended wholly, it would not be anticipated. It would be already present. Nevertheless, there must be an awareness of what is anticipated, for, if this were not the case, its arrival would not be recognized. The anticipator must somehow be aware of what he or she anticipates and, at the same time, be not fully aware of what he or she anticipates. This is the case not only with the reader of a preface but also with the author of the preface. As the author of this preface, this is where I find myself. I am not fully aware of what is being prefaced. When I started writing this preface, I was not fully aware of what was to follow. I did not fully have in hand what I wanted to preface. Accordingly, this preface remains incomplete and, most likely, will remain so, for what it prefaces is likely to be incomplete. A philosophical work is, of necessity, incomplete.
