Preface

The historical context of the Miracle on the Han River refers to the transformation from one of the world’s poorest countries to the global powerhouse following the Korean War (1950–1953), can be found in the fifteenth century transformed from a mediaeval commercial society to an early modern agricultural society. The resultant transformation had been attributed to the intensive work of the small peasants with enlightened Kings. The reign of King Sejong (r. 1418–1450) was a time period within world history with unprecedented advances in multiple areas. The technical publications compiled during his reign are also inextricably linked with the invention of the Korean alphabet as a national language system. In particular, Nongsa chiksŏl (農事直說) which can be translated into Concise Farming Talk (CFT) (also known as Straight Talk on Farming) can be regarded as the exemplar of reports on the new technological development industries led by the state.
