Abstract In an examination of a brief and innovative partnership, we compared outcomes for two disciplines, Elementary Statistics and General Psychology, across three formats: online as part of the San José State University-Udacity partnership (termed SJSU Plus), face-to-face (FTF), and online in a redesigned course offering. We also examine predictors of student performance in the SJSU Plus courses. The first offerings of the SJSU Plus courses showed poorer performance Erin Woodhead received her M.S. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from West Virginia University. She is Assistant Professor of Psychology at San José State University (SJSU). Her research interests include age-related differences in mental health problems and mental health services use among older adults. Preston Brown is a graduate student in the Research and Experimental Psychology Master’s degree program at SJSU. He currently works as a user experience researcher studying user web behavior for Hewlett Packard Enterprise. His other research interests include human-computer interaction and cognitive skill acquisition. Susan Snycerski received her M.A. in Behavior Analysis and Ph.D. in the Experimental Analysis of Behavior from Western Michigan University. She is an Assistant Professor in Research and Experimental Psychology at SJSU. Her research interests include learning, motivation, behavioral pharmacology, behavior analysis, and online education. Sean Laraway received his M.A. in Behavior Analysis and Ph.D. in the Experimental Analysis of Behavior from Western Michigan University. He is an Associate Professor of Research and Experimental Psychology and Adjunct Faculty in the Human Factors/Ergonomics M.S. Program at SJSU. His research interests include learning, motivation, behavior analysis, consumer behavior, human factors/ergonomics, and online education. Nicholas Bathurst received his M.A. in Research and Experimental Psychology from SJSU. His research interests include user experience, motivation, education, and gamification. Greg Feist received his Ph.D. in Psychology from University of California, Berkeley. He is Professor of Psychology at SJSU. His research interests include personality, creativity, and the psychology of science. He has also authored textbooks in the areas of Introduction to Psychology and Personality. Ronald Rogers received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Psychology from Rutgers University. He is Associate Dean of the College of Social Sciences at SJSU. His research interests include topics related to the scholarship of teaching and learning and, more broadly, higher education planning and policy.
