Publisher's Preface
This publication of a cornplete listing tagether with author/editor and subject indexes seerns a useful and appropriate way to celebrate the appearance of the SOOth volurne of Lecture Notes in Mathematics. In 1964, informal discussions between a nurober of rnathernaticians and editors of Springer-Verlag led to the founding of the series. It was born out of the desire to irnprove the distribution of interesting though informal and highly specialized lectures, serninar notes and expository accounts of new developrnents. Forrnerly such papers were disserninated as rnirneographed notes to a srnall "in-group" and were otherwise hard to obtain. In starting this service to the rnathernatical cornrnunity, we could not foresee its rnarnrnoth growth and ultirnate popularity. In retrospect it becornes clear that the success of the series is to no srnall extent due to the early involvernent of excellent rnathernaticians both as authors and editors. Vle should also like to point out the exernplary cooperation between our
production departrnent and a printing house which grew with the series and did indeed set standards for the handling of sornetirnes difficult to reproduce rnanuscripts, not to rnention the administrative problerns that occur if you publish five to six volurnes a rnonth with different rnailing schedules to authors, editors, conference participants and standing order custorners. Vle are a
little proud that we have been able to rnaintain the inforrnality
of the pioneering days and through it are still able to keep to sorne boundary conditions which had to be rnet to rnake the series worthwhile: 1. The price should be cornparatively low 2. The production time should be very short 3. The authors should be able to rnaintain their service to their peer group 4. They should not be bound by contractual restrictions concerning publication of their material in other form. Sorne adjustrnents which had to be rnade in editorial rnatters are described in the contribution by Albrecht Dold and Beno Eckmann who have devoted an irnrneasurable arnount of time and energy to the handling of the series.
