An Introduction to the Thermal Spray Body of Knowledge (TS-BOK) Introduction This article outlines the current status of an initiative by the Thermal Spray Society (TSS) to develop a Body of Knowledge (BOK) for thermal spray operators. This initiative, begun in 2010, will be implemented in phases and made available for consultation and comments as it George Kim evolves. Once completed, the BOK will be freely accessible on the TSS website, and will be continually updated to maintain currency with developments in the thermal spray industry.
over the thermal spray community, and will include expertise emanating not only from TSS, but also from ASM International, International Thermal Spray Association (ITSA), American Welding Society (AWS), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), among others. Thus, the TS-BOK will give the thermal spray industry a recognized focus around which to collect its knowledge elements. It will offer practitioners a resource for upgrading their expertise. It will offer non-practitioners a place to learn about the industry and its processes and, since it will be continually updated, it will provide a constant hub around which developments in the industry can be organized and monitored.
BOK Defined
The BOK and the Certified Thermal Spray Operator (CTSO) Program
As a generic concept, a BOK represents the corpus of knowledge, skills, techniques, and processes that make up a given industry or profession. It is the sum total of knowledge in a domain, and contains all the elements that we may need to know to develop mastery or expertise in the domain. This knowledge may be found in a variety of sources, including books, articles, courses, conferences, seminars, laws, rules, regulations, best practices, webinars, web sites, standards, qualification documents, etc. The term ‘‘BOK’’ may also refer to a written guide that classifies and maps out the sources of knowledge in a given industry. In this sense, a BOK is a critical resource for professionals, practitioners, and others interested in learning about the industry or enhancing their expertise. In the thermal spray field, TSS has undertaken to develop a written BOK that maps out expertise and knowledge in this industry, subdivided by domain or area of practice. The thermal spray BOK (TS-BOK) will be a compilation of information and intelligence about thermal spray, encompassing books, conferences, seminars and webinars, brochures, online information, etc. It will include information about uses of equipment and best practices, with references to key sources of information that individuals can turn to in each content area for further insight and self-education. It will be sourced from all
