Abstract In order to improve the air pollution caused by farmers’ treatment of crop by-products in the cold north, the energy saving and thermal insulation properties of improved straw brick buildings are studied. Firstly, the main process of building a house with straw brick and improved straw brick made of straw stalk is introduced, and a thermal performance calculation model based on the heat exchange principle of the wall is built. Then, the thermal load performance test parameters of ordinary brick and improved straw brick are introduced. Finally, the thermal load calculation results of ordinary brick and improved straw brick are compared and analyzed. The results show that in terms of economic efficiency, compared with ordinary brick, straw brick house not only has a wide range of sources but also has simple process of production, so it has a better economic efficiency; in terms of environmental protection, the production of straw brick houses, compared with ordinary bricks, will not emit emissions and is an environmentally friendly raw material; in terms of energy consumption, the insulation of straw brick can well regulate the indoor and outdoor environment and effectively reduce the heat loss. This study provides a good theoretical basis for popularizing the use of improved straw bricks. Keywords Improved straw bricks . Conductivity coefficient . Heat load . Thermal performance . Economic benefit of energy conservation
Introduction China has been an agricultural country since ancient times. Agriculture is the foundation of China’s development. The total output of China’s agricultural products (wheat, rice, etc.) is far ahead in the global rankings. However, since ancient times, the disposal of by-products of agricultural products is a difficult task faced by our country (Hou et al. 2017a). Until the twentieth century, wheat straw and straw were incinerated on the spot. However, with the development of industrialization and urbanization in China, the pollution problem has become more and more serious, and the state has issued a This article is part of the Topical Collection on Geological Modeling and Geospatial Data Analysis * Kai Li [email protected] 1

series of policies to prohibit the burning of straw stalk and other by-products of crops (HOU et al. 2017b; Ming 2016). Therefore, the environmentally friendly treatment of straw is an effective way to solve China’s green development. There are not many ways to use waste straw stalk material in China at present. Most of them are burned directly in the fi
