H a r d n e s s is 57.5 on a R o c k w e l l 3 0 - T s c a l e . ASTM g r a i n - s i z e n u m b e r is five. G r a i n s a r e e q u i a x e d and they show s o m e twins. But no e v i d e n c e of p r e c i p i t a t e s w a s s e e n at m a g n i f i c a t i o n s up to 500. T he m a t e r i a l w a s p r o d u c e d by the P h e l p s Dodge C o r p o r a t i o n in the f o r m of a flat e x t r u s i o n 2.5 c m x 10.8 e m in c r o s s - s e c t i o n . E s s e n t i a l l y the s a m e g r a i n g e o m e t r y is o b s e r v e d in s e c t i o n s p a r a l l e l and p e r p e n d i c u l a r to the e x t r u s i o n d i r e c t i o n . The e x t r u s i o n t e m p e r a t u r e w a s 1227 K and the s u b s e q u e n t aging t e m p e r a t u r e w a s 866 K f o r 1 h. Th e c o m m e r c i a l d e s i g n a t i o n of this m a t e r i a l is a l l o y PD 135. (This t r a d e name is used h e r e to identify the m a t e r i a l ; it is not an NBS e n d o r s e m e n t of a p a r t i c u l a r p r o d u c t . ) The n a t u r e of the p r e c i p i t a t e p h a s e has, a p p a r e n t l y , not b e e n studied, The e l a s t i c c o n s t a n t s w e r e d e t e r m i n e d by m e a s u r i n g t h e u l t r a s o n i c l o n g i t u d i n a l - w a v e and s h e a r - w a v e v e l o c ities, v l and v t using a M c S k i m i n s p u l se method at a f r e q u e n c y n e a r 10 MHz.
