Recent advances in civil engineering technology require greater accuracy, efficiency, and speed in the analysis and design of the corresponding systems. It is therefore not surprising that new methods have been developed for optimal analysis and design of real-life systems and models with complex configurations and a large number of elements. This book can be considered as an application of metaheuristic algorithms to some important optimization problems in civil engineering. This book is addressed to those scientists and engineers, and their students, who wish to explore the potential of newly developed metaheuristics by some practical problems. The concepts presented in this book are not only applicable to civil engineering problems but can equally be used for optimizing the problems involved in mechanical and electrical engineering. The author and his graduate students have been involved in various developments and applications of various metaheuristic algorithms to structural optimization in the last two decades.
