Foreword

Although there is a large scholarly literature on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), much of it has been written by outsiders rather than Southeast Asians. This means that we often learn more about the expectations and judgements of foreigners than we do about the priorities and concerns of people living in the region. This volume includes work from people based in Singapore and the Philippines—as well as South Korea—but it is most of all a Malaysian collection. The essays—which are the product of research rather than mere opinion—give a sense of the type of issue that is attracting concern in Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia today. The authors are not merely specialists in international relations and economics— who often dominate the analysis of regionalism—but also include scholars in such areas as law, economics, town planning, rural politics and youth development.
