Development of resistance: case report In a cohort study of 13 male patients, who tested positive for Mycoplasma genitalium at a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic in the USA between 8 August 2014 and 15 April 2016, a 29-year-old man was described, who developed drug resistance during treatment with azithromycin for Mycoplasma genitalium infection. The man, who had a history of having sex with multiple partners (50–99 female partners) and inconsistent condom use, was diagnosed with Mycoplasma genitalium infection related non-gonococcal urethritis. Further testing confirmed wild type infection without any resistant mutation. Hence, his treatment was with azithromycin 1g [route not stated]; however, the infection persisted. Hence, tests were performed, which showed A2058G mutation and the development of macrolide resistance-mediating mutation. Therefore, the man’s treatment was changed to moxifloxacin, that led to eradication of the Mycoplasma genitalium infection. Romano SS, et al.
