DRESS syndrome in a child: case report An 8-year-old boy developed DRESS syndrome following azithromycin treatment. The boy presented with fever and rash. One week earlier, he received a 4-day course of azithromycin for a sore throat [dosage and route not stated]. Examination revealed a body temperature of 38.2°C, a BP of 99/44mm Hg, a pulse rate of 132 beats/min, a respiratory rate of 18 breaths/min, and purpuric papules and plaques over the trunk, face and extremities. The boy was admitted to the ICU for hypotension, and he received pressor support. He subsequently developed eosinophilia. Analysis revealed positive titres of EpsteinBarr virus viral capsid antigen IgM, as well as atypical lymphocytes. On hospital day 3, a biopsy revealed interface and spongiotic dermatitis with eosinophils, suggesting a drug eruption. He received fluids, diphenhydramine and methylprednisolone. On hospital day 8, he was discharged in good condition. Bauer KA, et al.
