FOREWORD From 24 June to 29 June, 1984, the University of Missouri hosted an NSF-CBMS Regional Conference on "Factorization of linear operators and goemetry of Banach spaces". The principal speaker was G. Pisier (Paris). There were also five invited addresses given by J. Bourgain (Brussels), D. Burkholder (Illinois), J. Lindenstrauss (Jerusalem), H. Rosenthal (Texas), M. Talagrand (Paris) and L. Tzafriri (Jerusalem). The conference was attended by 168 mathematicians from many different countries. In addition to the main speakers there were over fifty contributed talks. Professor Pisier's lectures will be pUblished separately in the CBMS Regional Conference Series, published by the American Mathematical Society. In this volume are included twenty-two papers contributed by participants. We would conference a speakers; in whose superb

From the point of view of organization, we gratefully acknowledge the generous financial support of the Nationai Science Foundation and. the Argonne Universities Association Trust Fund. Milton Glick, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (UMCi, provided invaluable assistance both by helping to locate funding sources and by smoothing out some of the obstacles in our path; his constant support was much appreciated. The efficient and friendly assistance provided by Ms. Freddy Randolph and her colleagues at the UMC Office of Conferences is also gratefully acknowledged. Finally we would like to thank all of our colleagues and friends who donated their time and energy to help in this endeavor. A partial list in
