Abstract The investigation of artery vein changes over time is considered to be the significant diagnosis process of retinal diseases like diabetic retinopathy. The diagnosis includes the characteristics analysis of artery vein vessels, changes in its tortuosity level and artery vein ratio; hence, it is important to classify the artery and vein in a better way. Computer-aided diagnosis requires the automated classification of retinal artery and vein for diagnosing the progression of diseases. In this paper, a supervised classification with Bat algorithm is proposed to discriminate the artery and vein vessels in the retinal fundus images. A novel feature vector space, including both additive colour space as well as luminous chromaticity model colour space, is constructed. BAT algorithm is applied to select the feature group which improve the classification accuracy and also to reduce the dimensionality of feature space. The proposed method is developed and analyzed using the publicly available databases DRIVE, IOSTAR and STARE. 1 Introduction Computer-assisted diagnosis plays a vital role in the medical field nowadays, and there is an increase in requirement of well-furnished diagnosis tool for a speedy and accurate detection of syndrome. Diagnosis of diseases like Diabetic retinopathy and Glaucoma is primarily based on the analysis of retinal fundus images. Challenges behind the fundus image diagnosis includes variation of image contrast level among the persons belong to several regions of world. In addition, intra-subject contrast variation is also a most commonly observed challenge in the circumstance of retinal fundus image analysis. The diagnosis of most of the eyerelated diseases depends on the investigation on retinal blood vessels. Retinal blood vessels only carry vital nutrient to all the region of eye and the disease progression is mostly reflected as the variations on blood vessel like retinal artery and vein occlusion, tortuosity of blood vessels, changes in the artery vein ratio and in some cases formation of false blood vessels. Due to this, ophthalmologists prefer the diagnosis through the investigation on retinal blood vessels and hence Communicated by V. Loia.

for the frequent observations of some individuals, there is a need of automated system which has the ability to point out all the abnormalities. Retinal vasculature alteration is common in most of the retinal diseases like diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy, occlusion of artery, vein, etc. Even abnormal blood flow in the cardiac region may have their impact on the retinal vasculature modification. The correlation of coronary heart diseases with the artery vein ratio is clearl
