■ Bisphosphonate use may be associated with a significant increase in the risk of serious atrial fibrillation (AF) among postmenopausal women, according to research presented at the 81st Annual Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association (AHA). Researchers performed a meta-analysis of four clinical studies that used bisphosphonates and provided data on the outcome of serious AF; 26 126 postmenopausal women were involved. Serious AF was found to occur more frequently with bisphosphonate use versus placebo (RR 1.5, 95% CI 1.2, 2.0; p = 0.002). The researchers suggest that this increased risk "might be due to bisphosphonate induced release of inflammatory cytokines or shifts of calcium within atrial cells". Bhuriya R, et al.
